The Gab on Beach Volleyball Car Racing?

(April 27, 2007) - Gabrielle Reece likes speed, we know as much from her marriage to big wave gunner Laird Hamilton. But race cars?

So says ABC, as it prepares to unleash "Fast Cars and Superstars -- The Gilette Young Guns Celebrity Race," the latest reality TV show for bored couch surfers this summer. It's a seven-episode affair hosted by ESPN's own Kenny Mayne and Brad Daugherty that follows 12 celebrity drivers who partner with six of NASCAR's superstars, the likes of which are Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Kurt Busch, and Jamie McMurray.

Before you get too excited at beach volleyball's most famous face (at least on the fashion magazine rack) running, er, driving away with the trophy, consider she'll have some, double er, stiff competition. First there's Tony Hawk, who knows a thing or two shredding on four wheels. Then there's her hubby Laird, who trades in his stick for one that shifts. And never count out big sports names like John Elway, Serena Williams or Bill Cowher.

But John Salley? That figures to be a funny sight, him smushed into the driver's seat with his knees at his ears. And after all, did you see him try to play volleyball out in Hermosa last summer? And c'mon, WWE's John Cena? But we won't say that to his face.

Our wild card is Jewel. Yes, the singer. But we're thinking it's a definite no-go on William Shatner. Captain Kirk had great success going warp speed in the U.S.S. Enterprise, but something's telling us it won't be so easy in a stock car.

The series was in post-production, so stay tuned for its June 7 debut.
